MANCHESTER, England, April 11. AUSTRALIA's Adam Pine gave Kaio Almeida's world record time of 22.60 a good run, but settled for a semifinal-leading meet and national record time in the men's 50 fly at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Pine blistered the field with a time of 22.70 to clear not only the meet record of 22.71 set by Ian Crocker back in 2004, but also to snatch the Australian record from Geoff Huegill. Huegill previously set the standard with a 22.74 back in 2002.

Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin led the second semifinal with a time of 22.98, just off his national record of 22.90 from December.

Great Britain's Mark Foster qualified third in 23.00, and will be looking for his 13th world championships medal in short course competition.

Other qualifiers include Venezuela's Albert Subirats (23.01), Germany's Johannes Dietrich (23.13), Croatia's Mario Todorovic (23.17), Ukraine's Sergiy Breus (23.18) and Australia's Christopher Wright (23.27).
