World Short Course Championships: Australia’s Felicity Galvez Downs Meet, National Standards in 50 Fly Semis

MANCHESTER, England, April 10. FELICITY Galvez of Australia stood three-tenths of a second faster than the rest of the field, placing first in a meet-record time in the semifinals for the women's 50 butterfly at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Galvez stopped the clock at 25.48, erasing Anna-Karin Kammerling's 2002 World Championship record of 25.55. In addition, Galvez bettered the Australian national record of 25.56, which Lisbeth Lenton set in 2007.

Galvez will be primed to take a run at the world record of 25.33, which Kammerling set in 2005, tomorrow evening.

Two butterfliers from the Netherlands placed second and third. Hinkelien Schreuder and Inge Dekker each placed second and third with standards of 25.78 and 25.82, respectively.

Anna Gostomelsky again lowered the Israel national record, as she posted a fourth-place-worthy 25.99. She set the former record of 26.05 in the preliminary heats.

France's Diane Bui Duyet also nailed down a national record. Bui Duyet posted a time of 26.04, which demolished Alena Popchanka's former 2006 record of 26.41. Bui Duyet took fifth in the semifinal heats.

Rachel Komisarz of the United States (26.12), Fran Halsall of Great Britain (26.24) and Agata Korc of Poland (26.49) rounded out the top eight competitors.
