YMCA National Championships: Two YMCA National Records Tumble -- April 1, 2008

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 1. THE first night of swimming at the YMCA National Championships held in Fort Lauderdale featured a pair of YMCA national record swims.

Women's Meet
Candace Cooper of the Triangle Area and Lauren Solernou of Cheshire both became the first YMCA swimmers under 55 seconds in the 100 back when Cooper touched out Solernou, 54.90 to 54.93, in the event. The pair both eclipsed the YMCA record of 55.12 set by Tricia Weaner of West Shore in 2003.

Leah Gingrich of West Shore cruised in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.98, just two seconds off Corinne Showalter's record of 4:41.91. Kelly Ann Baird of Winston-Salem wound up taking second with a time of 4:50.75.

Showalter, meanwhile, fell just short of grabbing the 200 IM YMCA record with a winning time of 2:00.58. Brittany Johnson's 2003 record of 2:00.23 representing Winston-Salem survived for another year.

Emily Lloyd of Anne Arundel then surfaced from the 50 free with a triumphant time of 23.40. Margo Geer of Springfield and Mandy Myers of Triangle Area placed second and third with times of 23.59 and 23.60.

Cheshire's team of Solernou, Kim Jerome, Hollis Capuano and Mikki Morr won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.25.

Men's Meet
Morgan Priestley of Birmingham surpassed 50 seconds in the 100 back with a time of 49.33, while Evan Reed of Upper Main Line took second in 50.18.

Priestley then went back-to-back as he knocked nearly a second from the YMCA national record in the 500 free with a time of 4:21.74. He erased the 4:22.95 set by Kevin Nead of M.E. Lyons in 2003 en route to the win. Travis McNamara of Cheshire also surpassed the previous record with a second-place time of 4:22.63.

In a tight finish, Woody Joye of Montgomery touched out Mason Shaw of Spokane, 1:50.84 to 1:50.96, to win the 200 IM.

Peter Geissinger of Darien demonstrated his consistency as he posted a pair of 20.40s, one in prelims and one to win the 50 free at night. Those readouts came up just short of Gary Grant's 2003 YMCA record of 20.34 set for Lakeland Hills.

Schroeder's team of Peter Brengel, William Colbert, Victor Leclere and Bert Cebertowicz won the 200 medley relay in 1:33.27.
