British Championships: Caitlin McClatchey, Jemma Lowe Set National Records; Two World Paralympic Games Records Broken

SHEFFIELD, England, March 31. FIRST day of preliminary action at the British Championships featured plenty of action including a pair of Paralympic world records as well as two national standards.

Caitlin McClatchey broke the women's 100 free national record with a time of 54.31 to lead qualifying.

"I am really pleased with that I was after the qualifying time but didn't expect the record as well," McClatchey told British Swimming. "I have been swimming well and am looking forward to the rest of the week."

Additionally, Jemma Lowe eclipsed the women's 200 fly national standard with a time of 2:06.64 as an 18th birthday present to herself.

"I wasn't expecting that at all it just felt like a normal paced swim," Lowe told British Swimming. "It felt quite comfortable and I just didn't expect it."

In the men's races, Dean Milwain led men's 400 free qualifying with a time of 3:48.40, while Matthew Clay topped the men's 100 back with a 54.20.

In the multi-disability events, Sam Hynd broke the men's 400 free world record in the S8 division with a time of 4:32.92.

"It was a really hard race and before it I was targeting the world record time it is fantastic to get. It something I have been dreaming of and working towards since last year," Hynd told British Swimming.

Eleanor Simmonds, a 13-year-old swimming in the S6 division, snatched the women's 400 free world record with a time of 5:48.26.

"That felt really hard, I didn't know where I was at the end, I knew Nyree [Lewis – who led most of the time] was close behind me so to beat her in a record time is really pleasing," Simmonds told British Swimming.
