Chinese Trials: Women’s 100 Fly Upset Highlights First Day

SHAOXING, China, March 31. THE Chinese Olympic Trials got underway in Shaoxing today. The men's side featured favorites winning, while the women had one big upset.

Men's Meet
Asian-record holder Zhou Jiawei, whose continental standard stands at 52.19, won the men's 100 fly with a time off 52.27. That performance ranks among the top 15 in the world this year. Meanwhile, Wu Peng clipped the 53-second barrier in the event with a second-place 52.99.

"I have not swum under 53 seconds since the 2005 City Games. Several times, I wanted to meet the goal, but failed," Wu told Chinaview. "The morning score was better than last night's heat, and I think I'm already adjusted to competing finals in the morning now. There should be no problem for me to break the Asian record of the 200 meter butterfly on Wednesday."

In the only other men's competition of the first day, Liu Weijia won the 400 IM in 4:19.77, which stands outside the top 20 in the world this year. Huang Chaosheng took second in 4:23.92.

Women's Meet
Pang Jiaying earned the 200 free title with a time of 1:58.32, which is in the top 15 in the world this year.

Xu Yanwei walked away with the 100 fly title in 58.68, which is nearly in the top 10 in the world this year, while Asian-record holder Zhou Yafei actually finished third with a time of 59.28.

Yafei cited a shoulder injury for her disappointing time.

"I know the result is not satisfying at all," Zhou told Chinaview. "But the bronze medal is out of my expectation. I have to say that the shoulder injury stunted my performance at this meet. I dare not to turn over during sleep. I even feel painful while I breathe if I look down with my neck bending over."

Finally, a foursome from Shanghai won the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:05.47.
