New Zealand Trials: Moss Burmester Sets Commonwealth Standard in 200 Fly

WAITAKERE CITY, New Zealand, March 30. OVER the weekend, New Zealand held its Olympic Trials in Waitakere City. During the meet, Moss Burmester captured the men's 200 fly Commonwealth standard.

Burmester won the event in 1:55.50, but broke then standard with a 1:54.99 during prelims. Nick D'Arcy, who has now left the Australian team bound for the World Short Course Championships, previously set the record with a 1:55.10 at the Australian Trials.

Meanwhile, plenty of other national records fell during the meet.

Glenn Snyders swept the breaststroke events with national-record times in each event. He touched first in the 50 (27.98), 100 (1:00.50) and 200 (2:13.05).

Corney Swanepoel also set a national record with a 52.21 in the 100 fly while also winning the 50 fly in 24.24. Mark Herring grabbed the other men's record with a 49.54 in the 100 free.

For the women, Helen Norfolk reigned with a pair of national records along the way to five victories. Norfolk set records in the 200 (2:00.14) and 400 (4:39.07) IM events while also winning the 200 (2:01.05), 400 (4:13.50) and 800 (8:42.77) freestyles.

Elizabeth Coster set a national record in the 50 back (28.73) while also winning the 100 in 1:01.43. Additionally, Melissa Ingram clocked a national record in the 200 back (2:10.06).

Several other swimmers claimed multiple titles during the meet. Dean Kent swept the men's 200 (2:10.87) and 400 (4:26.39) IMs, while Kane Radford won the 400 (3:59.58) and 1500 (15:38.48) freestyles. Daniel Ball also captured the 50 (25.95) and 100 (55.63) backstrokes.

Charlotte Webby grabbed the women's 100 (1:04.17) and 200 (2:17.92) fly titles, while Hayley Palmer scored the 50 (25.70) and 100 (55.30) freestyle crowns.

Individual winners for the men included Michael Jack (200 free – 1:52.93), Cameron Gibson (100 free – 49.83), Orinoco Faamausili Banse (50 free – 22.51) and John Zulch (200 back – 2:03.96).

For the women, Zoe Baker (100 breast – 1:10.85), Amaka Gessler (50 fly – 28.38), Annabelle Carey (50 breast – 32.74) and Katie Bone (200 breast – 2:39.36) garnered single triumphs.
