NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Michigan’s Emily Brunemann Claims 1650 Free Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 22. WHILE the Michigan men are known as distance stalwarts, Michigan's Emily Brunemann did what no other Lady Wolverine has done in the history of the program with a triumph in the 1650 free during the NCAA Division I Women's Championships.

Brunemann emerged from a head-to-head battle with North Carolina's Whitney Sprague as she had way more left in the tank to touch in 15:53.69 for the triumph.

The victory also moved Michigan to 10 NCAA titles overall.

Sprague, meanwhile, checked in with a second-place time of 15:57.77, while Texas' Kelsey Ditto finished third from an earlier heat with a 15:59.01. Auburn's Maggie Bird was the hard-luck fourth-place finisher with a 15:59.81 during the final heat.

At the finish of the mile, Arizona stood first with 361 points while Auburn pushed its second-place total to 262. Texas A&M (227), Stanford (218) and California (217) made up the rest of the top five.
