NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Tennessee’s Christine Magnuson Bags 100 Fly Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 21. WITH the seventh-fastest time ever in the 100 fly, Tennessee's Christine Magnuson bagged the first NCAA title in the event for the Lady Vols at the NCAA Division I Championships in Columbus.

Magnuson came from behind in the final 25 yards to drop her lifetime best from 50.99 down to 50.70. She still remained fourth-fastest in the event behind Natalie Coughlin's 50.01, Rachel Komisarz' 50.10 and Dana Vollmer's 50.69.

Vollmer could not defend her title from 2007, but her time of 50.67 to win last year held up to Magnuson's charge. This year, Vollmer had to settle for 51.32 to give second-place points to California.

Arizona's Hayley Degolia, one of the Wildcats' biggest utility members who is versatile throughout the strokes, placed third with a time of 51.59. Degolia actually had led throughout the bulk of the race. Her time vaulted her from tied for 16th best in the event to 11th all time behind Mary DeScenza's 51.56.

At the end of the event, Arizona extended its lead with a top tally of 219, while Auburn remained second with 177 points. California (156), Stanford (149) and Texas A&M (146) comprised the rest of the top five.
