Hawaii High School State Championships -- March 16, 2008

HONOLULU, Hawaii, March 16. PUNAHOU swept both the men's and women's competition by a sizable margin at the Hawaii State Championships.

Punahou's women tallied 93 points en route to taking the team title. Iolani School and Kealakehe fought until the last event for second, and Iolani School won in the end by a 27-26 final.

The Punahou men found themselves in a familiar place as well, winning the men's team championship with 73 points. Kapalama finished up in second with 33 points while Hawaii Prep notched a third-place-worthy 28 points.

Women's Individual Results
Rachel Cote from Punahou set the lone record of the meet when she reset her 57.81 record that she set in 2007 with a 56.51. Cote also took second in the 200 IM (2:09.20).

Christel Simms of Punahou clocked a 1:49.72 200 freestyle, taking first by just less than four seconds. Simms also beat out the 100 butterfly field with a 56.83.

Punahou's Michelle Yoshida snared both sprint events, taking the 50 freestyle in 24.02 and the 100 freestyle in 52.19.

Seabury's Elizabeth Matthews was the only non-Punahou woman to win, and she did so twice. Matthews beat out the 100 backstroke state-record holder in the 200 IM, coming in at 2:08.76. Matthews went on to touch out Kiana White of Mililani in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:08.23 time.

Punahou completely outmatched the competition in the relays, winning all three. The 200 medley relay team of Cote, Kelli Moy, Marissa Yamamoto and Rachel Fujita teamed up to finish first in 1:51.17, the 200 freestyle relay contingent of Simms, Yoshida, Moy and LillyBelle Deer blasted out a gold-medal standard of 1:37.19 and the 400 freestyle freestyle relay containing Simms, Yoshida, Cote and Nica Nordyke blew away the field by 10 seconds in 3:33.80 clocking.

Men's Individual Results
Punahou's Brett Gomes topped his competition twice. He struck first in the 50 freestyle, clocking a 21.26, and repeated his success in the 100 freestyle (47.27).

Jack Pope of Lahainaluna posted wins in both longer-distance freestyles, taking the 200 freestyle in 1:42.75 and the 500 freestyle in 4:41.23.

Kapelama's Kekoa Taparra turned in two impressive times with each of his individual event victories. Taparra, who split a 32.01 breaststroke leg, took the 200 IM in 1:54.31. Taparra moved on to his bread and butter event, the 100 breaststroke, where he was the only swimmer to break the one-minute barrier (57.66).

Punahou also pulled the three relay sweep on the men's side. Its 200 medley relay foursome of Mitchell Chong, Spencer Dung, Brandon Ching and Eric Deer beat out Hawaii Prep for first in the meet's opening relay, taking the event in 1:38.28. The 200 freestyle relay grouping of Brett Gomes, Ruddy Kiessling, Deer and Eddie Zandee Van Rilland crushed the field in 1:27.69 while the 400 freestyle relay (Ching, Gomes, Kiessling and Chong) delivered a similar performance in the 400 freestyle relay (3:13.71).

Diving Results
The Punahou women took gold again when Kathryn Chinn competed in her first Hawaii State Championship meet, scoring a first-place 355.65. Sheyenne Machida of Maui scored a 340.70, taking second, while Punahou's Nicki Kumura rounded out the top three with a 330.70 score.

Punahou's Dylan Jude won the men's diving competition with a 374.90 score, edging Kapalama's James Keawe by .70 of a point (374.20). Joshua Tavares of Kapalama took third (366.85).
