NCAA Division II Championship Blog, Day 3: Southern Connecticut’s Shane Pelton

COLUMBIA, Missouri, March 14. THIS week, Swimming World is proud to present an athlete blog to give a bit of an inside look to the NCAA Division II Championships held in Columbia. Shane Pelton of Southern Connecticut State University will be checking in with regular content from the meet.

Pelton is a senior swimmer and business management major. Pelton, a Malvern, Pa., native, is a three-time Metropolitan Conference champion and is swimming in his first NCAA Division II Championship meet this season.

Hey guys. Just got back from finals of Day 2, and it was quite an interesting night. First off, I would like to say that I have officially accomplished my goal set as a freshman. I got my All-American plaque by placing 14th overall in the 400 IM.

But the big news of the meet was not me; it is one word – disqualification. Tomas Kuzvard was disqualified for a dolphin kick during his breaststroke in the IM, and the 400 medley relay had a lot of disqualifications as well. I mentioned it yesterday in my blog, but I have to touch on it again. Six, SIX DISQUALIFICATIONS between the men and female 400 medley relays.

I don't know what these swimmers are doing, but some one needs to tell them to relax on their starts. I like to call my start the OOO AHHH, but with the reaction pads I even am smart enough not to jump that gun. And the reason I call my start the OOO AHH is because when I dive in everyone is nervous I false started, but then they look at the official and see that I didn't. Hence them going OOO he false started, and the AHH when they realized I didn't. I know it's corny, but it's clever! Haha.

I would also like to give props to my boy Dan Vitagliano being the first male finalist in the 200 free. Congrats.

On the women's side, hats off to my teammate Kristen Frost taking another win in the 200 free, her second overall first place finish thus far. And I also have to give credit to the winner of the 400 IM from Drury; she swam fast and also spent some time with me in the drug testing area!

My MVP for the day has to go to the DJ of the swim meet. He is doing a great job. There was about an hour delay this morning to fix the system, but he kept things upbeat with some fine tunes. And tonight, he got the whole audience doing the YMCA. It was nice to see the adults showing their wicked nice dance moves.

On a different note, the drug testing is wild this year. Sure enough, I got drug tested after my 400 IM, and I was the fourth person on my team to get tested. Prior to this year, our university had two swimmers total ever to be tested at this meet. Thanks Mitchell Report! Haha. I have to be honest, it is very frustrating to be tested, and it's not easy going to the bathroom in a cup, while someone watches you! I sat there trying for over an hour, third time is a charm! But I wasn't the only one! Stage freight is very common, and if you need any suggestions on techniques, you can give me a call. I tried everything possible! But, it's getting late and I need my rest. Peace!
