ZPK 2008: Sanja Jovanovic Sets Croatian Record in 50 Back

ZAGREB, Croatia, March 8. THE first day of swimming came to an end at the ZPK 2008 meet held in Zagreb, Croatia this weekend as a slew of meet records tumbled, including one Croatian national standard.

Sanja Jovanovic earned top billing during the meet as she shattered her Croatian national record in the women's 50 back with a time of 28.25. That performance wiped out her standard of 28.95 set at the Paris Open last summer. The 50 back has had a renaissance of late as Jovanovic's 28.25 would have tied the old world record of Sandra Volker from 2000.

However, that time has now been surpassed at least seven times – including last night's world record from Hayley McGregory of 28.00.

In other action for the women, Miroslava Najdanovski in the 50 free (26.49), Smiljana Marinovic in the 100 breast (1:12.76), Denisa Smolenova in the 100 fly (1:02.62) and Nina Rangelova in the 200 free (2:05.16) all won with meet records.

Meanwhile, Mateo Muzek set a Croatian junior record with a winning time of 2:05.81 in the 200 back, while Dominik Straga set a meet record in the 200 free in 1:54.29. Vanja Rogulj also cleared the meet record in the 100 breast with a 1:02.71.

Other winners included Igor Cerensek in the 50 free (23.91), Lovro Kustic in the 100 fly (56.44) and Gordan Kozulj in the 50 back (26.44).
