NJCAA Championships: Indian River On Way to Another NJCAA Set of Titles

FORT PIERCE, Florida, March 6. Indian River Community College looked to be well on its way to its 34th and 27th straight men's and women's National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) titles after a strong second night of action at the NJCAA Championships.

The women nearly doubled up Monroe Community College, 301 to 152, for the team lead, while the men own a 375-141 advantage over Lincoln College.

IRCC's Shanda Casella nipped the NJCAA record in the women's 50 free as the highlight swim of the evening when she registered a readout of 23.26. That time eclipsed the 23.28 set by Teresa Moodie of Vincennes 10 years ago in 1998.

On the men's side of the sprint free, IRCC's Gideon Louw posted a winning effort of 19.87, off the NJCAA standard of 19.69 set by Camilo Becerra of IRCC in 2003.

IRCC also swept the middle distance events with Yesica Rojas winning the women's 500 free in 5:04.91 and Adam Corbin earning the men's 500 free title in 4:32.63.

In the 200 individual medleys, IRCC's Katie McRoberts stopped the clock in 2:09.68 for the women's title, while IRCC's Gordon Touw Ngie Tjouw captured the men's crown in 1:51.21.

In diving, IRCC's Kayla Purkiser won the women's one-meter event with 497.10 points, while Michael Wright of IRCC dominated the men's three-meter with a 614.50-point tally.

Results of the 200 free relays have not been made available to the public.
