Emily Seebohm Lights Up Brisbane Catholic Schoolgirls Championships With Near World Record

BRISBANE, Australia, March 5. ACCORDING to reports by Swimming Australia, youngster Emily Seebohm, 15, came up just short of the world record in the women's 50 back over the long course.

Seebohm lit up the Brisbane Catholic Schoolgirls Championships with a remarkable swim of 28.10 to become the second-fastest woman ever in the event just behind China's Yang Li, who set the world record with a 28.09 at the World Military Games.

The performance shattered the Commonwealth standard of 28.27 set by Sophie Edington last month

Additionally, Swimming Australia reports that after the swim meet managers put on a special time trial world-record attempt where Seebohm dropped another amazing time with a 28.19, which matched the former world record of Leila Vaziri from the United States.

"We had sort of set up for this over the last week, she has had a normal training week and she had eight races today but we did look at swimming well in this event," Seebohm's coach Matt Brown told Swimming Australia. "We thought she should put the new (Speedo LZR Racer) suit on for the 50m backstroke and see what happens and 28.10 was the result."
