CAA Championships: Day Three

FAIRFAX, Virginia, February 26. SOPHOMORE Ashley Danner continued her assault on the record books to highlight the action for George Mason at the third day of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships, as Mason won a total of five more event titles at Jim McKay Natatorium Friday.

The Patriot men held their second-place position in the team standings with 412 points, trailing first-place UNC Wilmington by 55. Mason's women are fourth with 296 points while Towson held its lead with 513 points.

Danner captured her second title of the week in the 100-yard breaststroke, doing so with a record-shattering time of 59.06. Besting her own record in an event where she earned All-America honorable mention a year ago, Danner shaved 0.12 seconds off her preliminary time for an NCAA automatic qualification time and a school, pool and CAA meet record as well as a conference top performance.

Sophomore Kristen Meier also earned another gold medal with her 321.75 points in the 1-meter dive, completing a sweep of the board events after winning the 3-meter on Wednesday in record fashion.

The men, meanwhile, earned three titles on the day. Sophomore Preston Wolter won his second CAA title of the week with a NCAA consideration qualification time of 3:52.53 in the 400-yard individual medley. Senior Eric Knight set a meet and program record and CAA top performance with his first-place time in the 200-yard freestyle of 1:35.85.

Finally, the men's 800-yard freestyle relay of Wolter, senior Steven Benecki, freshman David Kiss and Knight eclipsed the meet record by nearly five seconds with a school-record, B-cut time of 6:35.31.

Other highlights in the action were senior Caitlin Impink's second-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:19.58, an NCAA consideration qualifier. In the women's 800 free relay, Danner's opening leg of 1:49.37 set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle, leading the way to Mason's silver finish of 7:22.40, a B-cut time. She was joined on the relay by Impink, senior Claire Weems and Jenny Kane. Kiss rounded out Mason's top-3 finishes with a time of 49.02 in the 100-yard butterfly, good for second place.

The 2010 CAA Championships conclude Saturday, with the preliminaries set for 10 a.m. before the championships are decided in the 6 p.m. finals session.
