Two More World Records at the World Cup! -- February 1, 1997

Denis Pankratov, who was deprived of two short-course world records in Paris last year because of a bonehead mistake, had his world record officially recognized.

The double Olympic gold medalist, whose times in the 100m and 200m butterfly a year ago weren't recognized because meet organizers didn't have enough bottles to take urine samples, smashed the world record for the short-course 200m butterfly at the Gelsenkirchen, Germany World Cup 6.

Marcel Wouda of the Netherlands cashed in on his superb form this season with a world record in the 400m IM. Wouda, who just missed out on a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics, clocked 4:05.59.

Both world records were worth a bonus of $2,000 to the swimmers and a chance to win a car for the best performance of the German meeting which concludes on Sunday.
