Summit League Championships: Day Three

ROCHESTER, Michigan, February 17. VANESSZA Balogh and Johanna Gustafsson both broke pool and league records while earning NCAA ‘B' qualifying times as the Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams pushed their leads further on the third day of action at The Summit League Championships hosted by Oakland University at the OU Aquatic Center Friday night.
"We know we have it going on right now and the kids are really responding," said Pete Hovland. "When people are swimming as fast as they are it becomes a lot more fun and they are performing because of it. It's been a good two and a half nights and we're looking forward to tomorrow. "

Oakland women lead with 711 points followed by South Dakota State with 429 and South Dakota with 338. IUPUI is in fourth place with 319, Eastern Illinois in fifth with 194 and Western Illinois rounds out the standing with 135 points.

The Oakland menlead with 700 points, followed by South Dakota State with 403.5 and South Dakota with 281 points. Eastern Illinois is in fourth with 251 points, IUPUI is in fifth with 249.5 and Western Illinois rounds out the standing with 195 points.

Balogh defended her 400-yard individual medley crown with a time of 4:16.34 for the pool and league record while earning an NCAA'B' qualifying time. Gustafsson earns her third 100-yard breaststroke title with a pool and league record time of 1:02.53 and earned an NCAA'B' qualifying cut. Alyssa Busch defended her 100-yard backstroke title with an NCAA'B' qualifying time of 55.11.

Alyssa Vela recaptured the 200-yard freestyle crown for the first time since 2009 with a time of 1:49.54. Sandra Czerska became a two-time champion in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.67. The OU team of Busch, Gustafsson, Czerska and Balogh set a pool record and win the women's 400-medley relay with a 3:42.86

For the men, Alex Aceino in the 100-fly (48.30), Anders Jensen in the 100-back (47.04), Joe Rodgers in the 400 IM (3:53.07) and Scott Yarbrough in the 100-breast(54.82) all became three-time champions in their respective events earning NCAA‘B' cuts.

Nick Evans successfully defended his 200-free title with a time of 1:37.05, also good for an NCAA ‘B' qualifying time. The 400-medley relay team of Jensen, Yarbrough, Aceino, and Matyas Keresztes 3:14.63 earned an NCAA ‘B' qualifying cut.

The final day of The Summit League Championships will begin tomorrow with Prelims at 11 a.m. followed by Finals at 6 p.m.
