Coastal Collegiate Championships: Day One

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina, February 21. AFTER day one of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championship, Davidson women's swimming is in the lead with 221 points, Florida Gulf Coast is in second with 205 points and Gardner-Webb is third at 163. On the men's side, College of Charleston is first with 151 points, Davidson is in a close second at 241 and Gardner-Webb holds the third spot at 153.

Day one finals of the CCSA Championship started off with the women's 200-yard freestyle relay with the top three finishing schools earning times that beat the current No. 1 time in the CCSA Top 16. Finishing first in the event for the women was Georgia Southern , who finished in a time of 1:35.65. The Eagles relay team was comprised of Courtney Martz, Jennifer Clayton, Amanda Gerdeman and Katelyn Woolfolk. Finishing second were the Davidson Wildcats (Kirsten Allen, Lindsey Martin, Alexa Richardson and Emily Castle), clocking in at 1:36.35. Davidson barely inched past Gardner-Webb (Corey Hughey, Kelly Gueltig, Stepheni Stadnik and Rachel Warkentin), who finished third at 1:36.85. On the men's side, College of Charleston (Marc Herbert, Preston Parrish, Larry Buchanan, Randy Buchanan) earned the win with a time of 1:23.48, which becomes the Conference's new best time in that event. Coming in second was Davidson (Miller Williams, Patrick Whitman, Miguel Rodriguez and Fiete Stegger), who touched the wall at 1:24.07 and Gardner-Webb (George Partin, Patrick Elerding, Denaj Seymour and Steven Caudill) grabbed the third-place finish with a time of 1:25.82.

In the women's 500-yard freestyle, Florida Gulf Coast's Courtney Gallo took home the gold with a time of 4:58.76. Gardner-Webb's Heather Roka clocked in tenth's of a second after Roka (4:59.00) for second-place, while teammate Lizzy Ketterer placed third finishing the race at 5:29. On the men's side, Davidson grabbed all three top finishes, with Andrew Carlson clocking in at 4:38.03 for first-place and a new Conference record, Will Broughton finishing at 4:39.49 for second and Merritt Peele placing third at 4:40.26.

In the women's 200-yard individual medley, Florida Gulf Coast swept the race earning all three top finishes with Viktoria Hyddmark placing first in a time of 2:07.45 and setting a new CCSA record. Teammate, Rachael Rein earned the silver, clocking in right behind Hyddmark at 2:07.66, while Katie Oke finished third with a time of 2:08.31. For the men, College of Charleston took home the gold and silver, with Randy Buchanan finishing first (1:50.41) and Greg Greer coming in second (1:54.29). Rounding out third was Davidson's Nate Ladner, who finished less then a tenth of a second behind Greer (1:54.34).

In the 50-yard freestyle, Davidson's Lindsey Martin grabbed the gold completing the race in a time of 23.62. Gardner-Webb's Corey Hughey secured second-place, with a time of 23.98, while College of Charleston's Brittany Fieldson placed third at 24.06. Florida A&M's Mujahid El-Amin garnered first-place accolades in the men's 50-yard free with a Conference record-breaking time of 20.52. College of Charleston's Marc Herbert came in second at 21.19 and Davidson's Fiete Stegger rounded out third, touching the wall at 21.20.

In the women's 1-meter dive, North Florida's Emily Eisenhower took home the gold with a score of 236.25, Florida Gulf Coasts Karmin McNamara earned second (221.5) and Davidson's Linnea Buttermore finished third (218.95). On the men's side in the 3-meter dive, Florida A&M's William McKnight took home first with a score of 186.1, while VMI earned the second and third-place finishes, with Jeff Turner earning second (152.05) and Corey Morgan finishing third (138.05).

Closing out the meet, the Florida Gulf Coast (Viktoria Hyddmark, Catrina Silveira, Cori Lallier and Rachael Rein) 200-yard individual medley relay captured first-place in a time of 3:51.88. Coming in second was Gardner-Webb (Whitney Hooley, Stepheni Stadnik, Rachel Warkentin and Corey Hughey), clocking in at 3:53.42 and closing out third was Georgia Southern (Lindsay Goodman, Ashley White, Kristen Haudenschild and Ali Campbell) finishing in 3:54.87. On the men's side, College of Charleston (Marc Herbert, Randy Buchanan, Greg Greer and Larry Buchanan) placed first with a time of 3:22.94, Davidson (Scott Frantz, Jr., Nate Ladner, Miller Williams and Fiete Stegger) finished second, clocking in at 3:24.81 and Gardner-Webb (Kyle Hooley, Patrick Elerding, Denaj Seymour and George Partin) placed third with a time of 3:29.98.
