Missouri Valley Championships: Day Two

CARBONDALE, Illinois, February 15. AT the conclusion on the second day of the 2008 State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Missouri State University leads all scorers.

The Bears hold the lead with 591 points, Southern Illinois is in second with 519.5 points, Illinois State is in third with 461.5 points, Northern Iowa is in fourth place with 240 points and Evansville is in fifth place with 209 points.

Missouri State's team of Jordan Hawkins, Frannie Moody, Chelsea Dirks-Ham and Andi Rojas-Jimenz took first in the 200-yard medley relay with their time of 1:45.76. SIU's team of Kelly Dvorak, Kasey Fernandez, Marcela Teixeira and Therese Mattsson finished in second with a time of 1:46.19.

Illinois State's Tracy Deyell picked up a win in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:27.18. SIU's Lisa Jaquez finished fourth in the event with a time of 4:53.12. Also scoring in the event for SIU were Abby Blank (6th, 4:36.79) and Danielle Quarry (7th, 4:40.26).

MSU's Dirks-Ham picked up a win in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.34 seconds. Scoring for SIU were Kasey Fernandez (5th, 58.68), Samantha Dvorak (9th, 59.67) and Marcela Teixrita (11th, 1:00.36).

SIU's Therese Mattsson picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.86, which is a new MVC meet record. Also scoring for the Salukis were Isabel Madeira (4th, 1:53.65), Emily Duerringer (6th, 1:57.49), Karin Mullendore (7th, 1:57.64) and Tovah Gasparovich (8th, 1:58.45).

Julie Ju collected another win for the Salukis with her record-breaking time of 1:02.34 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ju broke the MVC record, the MVC meet record and the SIU pool of 1:03.30, which she set at the 2007 championships.

In 3-meter diving action, Illinois State's Katie Janonis won the event with a score of 241.75. SIU's Emily Gable followed in a close second with a score of 234.35.

The SIU relay team of Isabel Madeira, Emily Duerringer, Therese Mattsson and Julie Ju won the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:34.35.
