College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships: Day One

WHEATON, Illinois, February 20. THE Wheaton women and Carthage men finished first after day one of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships, hosted by Wheaton College.

The Wheaton women were in first with 256 points, followed by Carthage (253), Illinois Wesleyan (150), Augustana (85), Rose-Hulman (82), Millikin (67) and North Central (56). On the men's side, Carthage is in the lead with 309 points, followed by Wheaton (182), Illinois Wesleyan (156), Rose-Hulman (104), Millikin (94), North Central (52) and Augustana (52).

Six meet records fell on Thursday including the first event of the night. Carthage kicked off the evening by coming away victorious in the women's 200 freestyle relay as the team of Sarah Reynertson, Alyssa Messina, Michelle Pelka and Amanda Croix won with a meet-record time of 1:35.41. The Wheaton team of Moire Yue, Bethany Jacobs, Liz Hartman and Heather Crockett finished second (1:37.30). In the men's 200 freestyle relay, Carthage's team of Bryce Davis, Blake Bendix, Nathan Ripley and Andy Bax took home the title with a meet-record time of 1:22.74. Wheaton's team of Matthew Gallagher, Rob Morris, Rob Myers and AJ Provonsha were second, clocking in at 1:25.83.

Pelka earned the title in the 200 IM with a meet-record time of 2:07.66 while Wheaton's Sloan Skinner was second (2:11.19). On the men's side, Carthage's Derek Schneider won with a time of 1:55.79 while teammate Doug Schranck was second (1:56.03).

In the 50 freestyle, Croix broke her own meet-record and took first (23.49) while Reynertson was second (24.12). Bax and Ripley finished first and second on the men's side with times of 20.98 and 21.07 respectively.

The 500 freestyle saw Illinois Wesleyan sweep the titles on both the men's and women's side. Angela Lugg won with a meet-record time of 5:03.46 while Chris Betzle took home the men's title with a time of 4:37.09. Wheaton's Ethan Cramer and Lauren Jurgens placed second with times of 4:40.86 and 5:04.80 respectively.

The night concluded with the 400 medley relay as Carthage's Reynertson, Heather Croix, Pelka and Amanda Croix set a new meet record by winning with a time of 3:56.21. The Wheaton team of Yue, Hartman, Crockett and Ashley Matthiesen was second with a time of 3:57.09. The Carthage men's team of Chris Varner, Stephen Schranck, Davis and Ripley won with a time of 3:25.58 while Wheaton's team of Andrew Painter, Jonathan Nitz, Morris and Provonsha was second with a time of 3:27.64.

Friday's preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m. with the women's 400 IM while the finals are set to start at 6 p.m. with the women's 200 medley relay.
