Northeast Conference Championships: Day One

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, February 14. CENTRAL Connecticut State swept all six events on day one of the 2008 NEC Swimming and Diving Championships, racing to the lead with 219.50 points. Wagner finished the first day in second with 126.50 points, followed by Saint Francis (PA) in third (110) and Sacred Heart in fourth (73). St. Francis (NY) and Mount St. Mary's rounded out the field of six with 53 and 42 points, respectively.

Central Connecticut State's 200 free relay team of Erin Crowley (Plainville, CT/Plainville), Alyssa Carlucci (Danbury, CT/Danbury), Megan McGorry (West Haven, CT/West Haven) and Rachel Brookman (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill) captured the Blue Devils' first win of the day, touching in with a time of 1:37.71. Wagner's Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon), Jessica Hart (Summerfield, NC/Northwest), Michelle Varga (Astoria, NY/Arch Bishop Molloy) and Halley Allen (Bryan, TX/Bryan) placed second with a time of 1:38.01, followed by Saint Francis' (PA) Elise Merrill (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring), Sirae Riley (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest), Blair Kosela (Cresent, PA/Moon Area) and Jenn Jeffreys (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township).

The Blue Devil's Kristen Jurzynski (Seymour, CT/Holy Cross) kept things rolling, capturing the Blue Devils' second win of the day with a first place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.94. Wagner's Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) placed second with a time of 5:01.46, with CCSU's Alex Huffman (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) finishing third (5:09.72). Teammates Lindsey Snyder (Winterport, ME/Bangor) and McGorry finished 1-2 in the 200 IM with times of 2:07.04 and 2:11.38, respectively, while Wagner's Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT/Chesire) captured the bronze with a time of 2:11.68.

The Blue Devils' Crowley notched CCSU's fourth win, placing first in the 50 free with a time of 23.88. Brookman and Allen tied for second with a time of 24.52. CCSU, who owns the Northeast conference record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:49.99, continued its dominance in the event en-route to its fourth straight title. The Blue Devils' Snyder, Alyssa Reinhard (Chesire, CT/Chesire), Brookman and Jurzynski touched in with a time of 3:55.25, followed by Wagner's Allen, Bethny Brown (Enfield, CT/Ennco Fermi), Hart and Rodgers with a time of 3:59.78. Sacred Heart's Johannah Kos (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam), Laura Johnson (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook), Katie Marshall (Cumberland, RI/Saint Mary Academy-Bay View) and Molly McDonald (Sag Harbor, NY/Brentsville, District) placed third (4:06.60).

CCSU's Liz Wahlberg (Manchester, CT/Manchester) and Kate Sohon (Southington, CT/Southington) completed the Blue Devils' third 1-2 finish of the day, finishing first and second in the one-meter dive with scores of 219.00 and 206.60, respectively. St. Francis' (NY) Christina DeBianchi (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill Academy), a three time NEC Diver of the Week honoree, finished third with a mark of 177.30.
