Hyman Wins 200 Fly

By Kari Lydersen

Misty Hyman won the 200 fly in 2:09.27, just ahead of 400 IM champion Kaitlin Sandeno (2:09.54).
Hyman went out fast to build a commanding lead at the 50, 100 and 150; her 1:00.08 100 split (faster than the 1:00.60 she swam in the finals of the 100 fly)was under world record pace. At the 150 she was still 2.39 seconds ahead of Sandeno, but Sandeno finished strongly to nearly catch Hyman.
Hyman said "I didn't realize how fast the [early pace] was but once I was out front I was going to do anything I could to stay out front. Towards the end of the race I was so tired I almost froze, but I was able to keep it going."
On making the olympic team, Hyman gushed: "It feels so good, it hasn't hit me yet. I am so excited. it's a dream come true."
With this swim Hyman, 21 and representing Stanford, makes up for a disappointing 100 fly in which she was seventh. Sandeno, 17 and representing Nellie Gail Gators, adds another event to her Olympic schedule.
Sandeno commented: "It's exciting to be swimming two events. the 200 fly is a new event for me and I really like it. Usually I come on in the last 50 meters. That's where most people tail off and that's what I work on. I usually don't go out so fast, but because of Misty that's what we have to do."
Third was Emily Mason in 2:11.96, fourth Shelly Ripple in 2:13.30, fifth Kristine Quance-Julian in 2:14.18, sixth Melissa Greene in 2:14.44, seventh Molly Freedman in 2:14.85 and eighth Maddy Crippen in 2:15.20.
