Kowal, Wilkens Qualify First in 200 Breast, 200 IM Prelims -- August 13, 2000
Event 19: Women's 200 Breast
Kristy Kowal qualified first for the semi-finals of the 200 breast with a 2:26.32. In the 100 breast, Kowal missed making the Olympic team by .01 of a second.
Second qualifier was Megan Quann, the 100 breast champion, in 2:28.12. Third was Amanda Beard, the 1996 Olympic silver medalist in this event, in 2:29.62. Fourth was Annemieke McReynolds in 2:30.77, fifth Kristen Caverly in 2:31.78, sixth Jenna Street in 2:32.43. Stacianna Stitts, who made the Olympic team in the 100, was seventh in 2:32.70. Katie Yevak was eighth in 2:32.99.
Rounding out the semi-final are: Amy Balcerzak (2:33.09), Tara Kirk (2:33.24), Sarah Chandler (2:33.61), Maddy Crippen (2:33.86), Tamber Covington (2:34.05), Katie Hathaway (2:34.32), Laura Davis (2:34.58) and Katie McClelland (2:34.59).
Event 20: Men's 200 IM Prelims
Tom Wilkens qualified first in the 200 IM prelims in 2:02.96; Wilkens finished third in the 400 IM after being a favorite to make the team.
Tom Dolan, the 400 IM champion, qualified second in 2:03.26. Ron Karnaugh, 34, qualified third in 2:03.64. Joe Montague was fourth in 2:04.08, and Kevin Clements was fifth in 2:04.19. Sixth was Beau Wiebel in 2:04.55, seventh Robert Margalis in 2:04.71, and eighth Dan Trupin in 2:04.86.
Rounding out the semi-final are: Ryan Lusk in 2:05.07, Rob Canales (2:05.26), Eric Shanteau, Christopher Greenwood (2:06.26), Tim Carlson, Ben Anderson, Steve Brown (2:06.72) and in a tie for 16th at 2:06.74, Tony Kurth and Daniel Ketchum, who swam in heat 2. Ketchum and Kurth will have a swim-off.
