Luxembourg Euro Meet: Sprints Showcased During Second Day of Swimming -- January 26, 2008

LUXEMBOURG, January 26. THE 50-meter distance dominated most of the second day of long course swimming at the Luxembourg Euro Meet. Additionally, several meet records fell during a strong day of competition.

Men's 50 breast
Igor Borysik touched out Valery Dymo for the title in the sprint breast event, 28.54 to 28.68. Johannes Neumann scored a close third place with a time of 28.87.

Women's 50 breast
Kerstin Vogel shot down the meet record in the women's sprint breast event with a swift time of 31.92. Sonja Schoeber finished second in 32.40, while Yuliya Pidlisna placed third in 32.71.

Men's 50 fly
Andriy Serdinov led a strong Ukrainian effort in the event with a winning time of 24.37. Artem Pron (24.74), Denys Sylantyev (24.85) and Sergiy Advena (24.89) completed a 1-2-3-4 effort for Ukraine.

Women's 50 fly
Israel's Anya Gostomelsky touched out Ukraine's Lyubov Korol, 27.21 to 27.45 to win the sprint fly event. Annika Mehlhorn finished third in 27.80.

Men's 200 free
Jens Thiele picked up the victory with a top time of 1:50.12, while Ukraine's Oleksandr Isakov placed second in 1:50.96. Christian Kubusch rounded out the top three in 1:51.03.

Women's 200 free
Ida Marko-Varga pipped Annika Lurz in a hard-fought battle to the finish. Marko-Varga stopped the clock in 1:59.96, while Lurz settled for second in 2:00.01. Lurz led through the initial 150 meters, 1:28.53 to 1:29.44, but succumbed to Marko-Varga's superior last 50 sprint of 30.52 against Lurz's 31.48. Petra Dallman secured third place in 2:01.60.

Men's 200 IM
After first setting the meet record with a 2:04.24 during prelims, Kamil Kasprowicz lowered the standard even further with a winning effort of 2:03.27. Markus Deibler finished second in 2:04.98, while Vadym Lepskii placed third in 2:05.36.

Women's 200 IM
Ukraine's Yana Klochkova snared her second IM title of the meet, this time with a meet-standard readout of 2:16.47. The performance beat compatriot Ganna Dzerkal, who took second in 2:17.83. Annika Mehlhorn wrapped up third place with a 2:18.40.

Men's 100 back
Helge Meeuw cruised to a win in the men's 100 back with a time of 55.67. Orn Arnarson wound up with second in 56.26, while Stev Theloke placed third in 56.76.

Women's 100 back
Antje Buschschulte raced to the finish to pocket the title in the women's 100 back with a time of 1:02.89. She overcame an initial deficit to Jenny Mensing, who took second in 1:03.35. Christin Zenner finished third in 1:04.08.

Men's 200 breast
Ukraine's Igor Borysik attacked the men's 200 breast and finished the race with a meet-record time of 2:14.78. Israel's Tom Beeri touched second in 2:16.98, while Germany's Marco Koch placed third in 2:17.59.

Women's 200 breast
Canada's Chelsey Salli claimed the crown in the longer distance breaststroke with a readout of 2:30.11. Simone Weiler provided the closest competition with a second-place 2:31.23, while Ukraine's Yuliya Pidlisna finished third in 2:31.90.

Men's 50 free
Steffen Deibler dominated the men's splash-and-dash with a winning effort of 22.50. Stephan Kunzelmann snared second in 23.07, while Yuriy Yegoshin placed third in 23.71.

Women's 50 free
Petra Dallman concluded the day with a triumph in the women's 50 free when she stopped the clock in 25.41. Darya Stepanyuk hit the wall second in 25.88, while Anya Gostomelsky grabbed the final medal of the day with a third-place 25.95.
