Geneva International: Second Day Features Meet Record from Kimberly Buys

GENEVA, Switzerland, January 19. WHILE the youngsters made some noise the first day of long course swimming at the Geneva International, Kimberly Buys clocked a meet record in the women's 200 IM for the top performance of the day.

Emily Vavourakis opened the second day of swimming with a win in the women's 100 free when she touched in 57.04 to hold off Lisa Vitting (57.59) and Nina Van Koeckhoven (57.64). In the 15-16 age division, Jolien Sysmans posted a quick time of 57.44. Clemens Rapp emerged with the men's 200 free title in 1:51.44 as he knocked off second-place finisher David Karasek (1:52.99).

While Chelsey Salli clocked a meet-record in the open women's 200 breast with a 2:31.96, Elise Matthysen, 16, recorded the fastest time of the event in the 15-16 age division with a 2:29.76.

Bjorn Mates picked up the men's 200 back crown with a top time of 2:03.48, while Matthew Swanston, 17, would have placed second in the open race with his 2:05.25 to win the 17-18 age division.

Bridget O'Connor smoked the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:12.67, well ahead of second-place finisher Griet Buelens (2:15.75).

In one of the closer races of the second day, Igor Marchenko beat out Martin Verner, 54.20 to 54.94, in the men's 100 fly.

Swann Oberson downed Louise Jansen, 4:19.06 to 4:21.58, in the women's 400 free, while 16-year-old Canadian Lindsay Seemann continued her strong meet with a 4:20.94 in the 15-16 age division.

Buys walked away with the women's 200 IM crown when she clocked a meet-record time of 2:18.49. That performance eclipsed the 2:20.19 set by Veronica Massari in 2004. Sinead Russel, 15, won the 15-16 age division with a time of 2:19.77.

In 50 breast action, Silke Van Hoof won the women's race in 30.13, while Ondrej Smetana took the men's in 30.38.
