Arizona Swimmer Wins Wendy’s High School Heisman Award

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, December 10. WENDY's, the title sponsor of the High School Heisman award, announced this weekend that Angela Duckworth of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., won the female portion of the High School Heisman award.

Duckworth, an Academic All-American, set the Arizona state record in the 500 freestyle and has garnered All-American, All-State, All-District and All-League/Conference distinction.

The Honor society member also has been extremely active away from the pool. She's a four-time team captain for Relay For Life and has volunteered for Special Olympics. She's also an assistant care giver with Scottsdale Assisted Care Homes, and has helped out with Climb to Conquer Cancer and Walk of Hope.

The Arizona Republic spoke with Duckworth for a story that ran this weekend. In it, she explained that her passion for helping with cancer causes stems from her mother, Kim, being a breast cancer survivor.

"Her whole story got me involved in community service," Duckworth told The Arizona Republic. "She's my hero."

Overall, Duckworth has raised more than $6,000 for cancer research according to the article.

"I was diagnosed when (Angela) was real young," Kim told The Arizona Republic. "She didn't understand what it was about. A lot of teenagers don't have to think about stuff like that. Our relationship grew from a normal, teenage daughter relationship with her mother. It's been a rallying cry for our family."

Trevor Van Ackeren of Pennsylvania, a multiple sport star for Liberty High School in Bethlehem, won the male accolade.
