Erica Morningstar Cracks 25 For Canadian Record During Paul Bergen Junior International

PORTLAND, Oregon, December 8. DURING the second day of swimming at the Paul Bergen Junior International meet, the crowd at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center was in for a treat. On top of seven meet records, the fans had the chance to witness a Canadian record in the women's 50 free over short course meters.

Erica Morningstar ripped through the splash-and-dash with a winning effort of 24.84. The performance made her the first Canadian female under 25 seconds, as the previous standard had been held by Laura Nicholls with a 25.03 from 2004.

In other action, Gabrielle Soucisse of Canada won the women's 200 back with a time of 2:07.28 to break the meet record, while Felix Wolf of Germany touched first for a meet-record time of 1:56.44 in the men's 200 back.

In the men's 50 free, Tualatin Hills' Morgon Henderson-Kunz picked up the victory with a time of 23.07.

The women's 100 breaststroke provided another meet record with a time of 1:09.68 by Chelsey Salli of Canada, while Giacomo Perez D'Ortona won the men's race in 1:02.29.

Melanie Henique of France, 14, hit the wall in 27.40 for the women's 50 fly crown, while Jonathan Blouin of Canada grabbed the men's 50 fly title in 24.33.

Stephanie Horner continued a strong weekend with her fourth victory of the meet when she touched in 4:06.84 to down the meet record in the women's 400 free. Meanwhile, Robin Backhaus of Germany clocked a 3:50.33 in the men's 400 free for victory.

Once again, Germany mopped up the relays as the women's 400 freestyle relay clocked a meet-record 3:47.48, while the men touched in 3:19.95 for the win.
