Harold Anderson Invitational

KINGSTON, Rhode Island, December 1. THE University of Rhode Island men's and women's swimming & diving teams placed first at the 2007 Harold Anderson Invitational at Tootell Aquatics Center. The men finished in first place with 703 points – more than 200 points more than second-place Providence – while the women edged the University of Maine 725-676 to capture their first Harold Anderson crown since 2004. The men have won the event each year since its inception in 1996 (12 times).

The University of Maine men's swimming & diving team finished with 492.5 points, followed by Providence College with 445.5 and Fairfield University with 310. On the women's side, Providence finished third with 355 points and Fairfield was fourth with 308.

The women opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay as senior Caitlin Regan, freshman Samantha Veccia, senior Julie Kent and senior Cassie Mizia finished with a time of 4:05.36. Later, the team of Mizia, freshman Kinsey Tarbell, freshman Lillian Falconer, and Kent won the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:38.69. The Rams also took first in the 200-yard free as Mizia, Kent, sophomore Maura Zaneski and senior Maria Cieslewski posted a time of 1:40.91.

Individually, Falconer captured the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.38 and also the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:35.09. Lalli, meanwhile, won the 50-yard free (25.44) and junior Kelly Mohr won the 1 meter dive with a score of 204.40. Sophomore Haley Johnson won the 3 meter dive for Uri with a score of 193.75

The men's team also captured the 400-yard medley relay as sophomore Gerard Donlevy, freshman Daniel Backler, senior Ryan Sheatsley (Allentown, Pa.) and junior Derek Denard posted a time of 3:33.36. The team of Donlevy, Sheatsley, Denard and senior Jason Jacintho also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:11.69, and Denard, Jacintho, sophomore Matthew Burak and sophomore Matthew Zrada won the 200-yard free with a time of 1:28.27. Donlevy, Jacintho, Denard and freshman Keith Nystrom won the capture first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:39.34).

Donlevy won three individual races for the Rams, capturing the 200-yard IM (1:56.38), the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.24), and the 200 yard backstroke (1:51.87). Freshman Joseph Sagginairo picked up wins in the 500-yard free (4:47.58) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.00). He also tied Sheatsley for first place in the 200-yard butterfly as both finished with a time of 1:55.93. Sheatsley later picked up a win in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:15.06.

Burak captured first place in the 50-yard free with a time of 21.62 while Zrada won the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:57.24. Backler also picked up a solo win for the Rams as he finished in first place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.40).
