Israel's Borchovsky Cracks One Minute in Women's 100 Fly at Euro Jr. Champs -- July 29, 2000

DUNKERQUE, France. July 29. ISRAEL's Vered Borchovsky, 16, who earlier in these championships set a European Junior Record in the women's 50 meter fly (27.00), today became the first female European junior swimmer to crack a minute in the 100 meter fly. Borchovsky's 59.79, swum in the second semi-final today, puts her some two seconds ahead of Romania's Diana Mocanu for tomorrow's final. Borchovsky's time was also an Israeli national record.

Two other European Junior marks were set in the finals today, bringing to 12 the records set in the first three days of competition.

Hungary's Mihaly Flaskay, swimming in Lane 2, upset the field to take the men's 50 meter breaststroke in EJR time of 28.54, as he finished a touch ahead of Croatia's Vanja Rogulj (28.60).

Denmark's Louise Ornstedt set a EJR in the women's 50 back, clocking 29.39.

In other finals, Hungary's Eva Risztov won her third event of the championships, taking a narrow win in the 400 free. Out fast, Risztov held off a determined challenge by Irina Oufimtseva to win 4:12.12, to 4:12.94. Oufimtseva negative split her race, but her final sprint wasn't nough to catch Risztov, who has also won the 800 free and 200 fly.

Sergiy Fesenko of Ukraine, son of the 1980 Olympic champion, captured the men's 200 meter fly in 2:00.03, two a body length in front of Hungary's Viktor Bodrogi (2:00.97).

The Netherlands easily won the women's 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay in 3:49.77.

In semi-finals, Desiree Mahle, Germany, and Sweden's Anne Marie Guilbrandsen, are set to do battle in the women's 100 meter breaststroke final tomorrow, as they clocked leading times of 1:11.45 and 1:11.56.

Germany's Toni Helbig, who earlier won the men's 50 backstroke, is the top qualifier in the 100 at 57.06, followed by Holland's Sander Ganzevles, the runner-up in the 50.

In the men's 100 free, Croatia's Duje Draganja leads the field at 51.43. Yesterday he won the 50 free in 22.68.
