Nike Invitational Day One -- November 29, 2007

GAMBIER, Ohio, November 29. HOSTING the second-annual Nike Invitational, the Kenyon College women's swim team failed to notch an event win Thursday, but succeeded in racking up some blistering times in the first day of the three-day event. The evening session held room for just two distance events, but the Ladies managed to make history in one of those events.

In the meet-opening swim, the 800-yard freestyle relay, a University of Kansas quartet set the Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium record with a time of 7:29.42. Kenyon's entry in the same event placed third with a time of 7:30.78, which was a new College record. The Ladies responsible for that time were Lauren Brady (Tyngsboro, MA/Phillips Exeter), Tina Ertel (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle), Rebecca Wenzlau (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Senior), and Danielle Arad (Yorba Linda, CA/Tarbut V'Torah). They erased the old Kenyon mark of 7:33.38 set at the 2004 Division III national championship meet. It went without saying that the time was also good for automatic qualification into this season's NCAA DIII Championship.

Kenyon also had a second entry in the 800-yard freestyle relay. It scored points and clocked in at 7:39.00, which was another NCAA 'A' cut time. That Kenyon group connsisted of Catarina Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sao Luis), Kara Stiles (Chelsea, MI/Chelsea), Adrienne Amador (Woodstock, GA/Woodstock), and Kathryn Leech (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel Area).

In the second and final event of the evening, the 1,650-yard freestyle, Kansas' Ashley Robinson set another pool record. She clocked in at 16:44.83, knocking off teammate Molly Brammer's old mark of 17:09.22 set earlier in the year. Kenyon's top swimmer in the event was freshman Victoria Lederer (North Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic), who placed fifth with a time of 17:17.28--good for another NCAA 'A' time. Her classmate Kati Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) was right on her tail and touched the wall in 17:21.36, less than one second off the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.

Special thanks to Kenyon for contributing this report.
