Meet of the Week: Texas Invite Day One Finals

AUSTIN, Texas, November 29. JUST an hour a white-hot USA Short Course National Championships started in Atlanta, the University of Texas opened day one finals of the Texas Invite in Austin.

Women's 200 freestyle relay
Arizona State earned a surprising victory over intra-state rival Arizona as the quartet of Caitlin Andrew, Jen Beckberger, Lindsey Brown and Jess Perazzo touched out the Wildcat squad of Lindsey Kelly, Anna Turner, Taylor Baughman and Emma Darlington, 1:29.87 to 1:29.92.

Stanford made it an all Pacific 10 podium as Julia Smit, Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy, Kate Dwelley and Brooke Bishop placed third in 1:30.18.

Men's 200 freestyle relay
The Arizona Wildcat men, meanwhile, surfaced triumphant in the men's 200 free relay as Albert Subirats, Jordan Smith, Darian Townsend and Nicholas Nilo touched in 1:17.74 for the win.

Tennessee's team of Octavio Alesi, Jonas Persson, Nolan Morrell and Barry Murphy took second in 1:18.18, while Longhorn's Dale Rogers, Ian Crocker, Neil Walker and Garrett Weber Gale placed third in 1:19.11.

Women's 500 freestyle
Longhorn Kirsty Coventry jumped into the top 20 of all time in the event with a swift time of 4:38.63 to post a commanding victory in the event. Texas' Susana Escobar provided her assistant coach with the closest competition when she touched in 4:45.04, while Arizona's Leone Vorster completed the top three in 4:45.97.

Women's 100 butterfly
Arizona State almost pulled off another Pac 10 shocker as Caitlin Andrew raced to a time of 52.89. However, Stanford's Elaine Breeden stepped up her swim during the back half as she tracked down Andrew with a 52.74. Andrew had led Breeden 24.91 to 25.03 at the 50-yard mark. Arizona's Ana Agy rounded out the top three in 53.00.

Arizona's Hailey DeGolia went out extremely fast with a 24.60 at the 50, but paid for it coming home with a sixth-place 53.29. Meanwhile, Dana Kirk won the sibling rivalry swim with sister Tara with a fourth-place 53.07 against Tara's 53.23.

Men's 100 butterfly
Arizona's Albert Subirats nearly cleared the 45-second mark again, but came up short with a first-place time of 45.08. He currently holds the U.S. Open and top mark of all time in the event with a 44.57 set at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Subirats beat American record holder Ian Crocker, who touched in 45.50 – off his 44.72 American standard.

Stanford's Austin Staab snared a hotly-contested third place with a time of 46.37, while Tennessee's Octavio Alesi (46.57) and Tucson Ford's Masayu Kishida (46.77) joined him under 47.

Men's 500 freestyle
Arizona's Jean Basson clipped his lifetime best in the event with a sterling time of 4:13.42 to win the middle-distance event. His previous top time came with a 4:13.44 at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Texas' Michael Klueh finished a bit off his best time of 4:14.10 set in 2006, but still placed second with a quick time of 4:14.71, while Arizona State's CJ Nuess took third in 4:20.81.

Women's 200 IM
Longhorn Kirsty Coventry claimed her second victory of the evening with a time of 1:56.19 as she held off hard-charging Julia Smit of Stanford, who took second in 1:56.74.

Tucson Ford's Whitney Myers closed out the top three with a 1:58.88, while Arizona teammate Carley Beaudreau wound up fourth in 1:59.67.

Men's 200 IM
Aaron Peirsol of Longhorn posted a sterling time of 1:44.80 in the shorter medley as he moved into the top 25 in the event. Peirsol never trailed as he jumped out to a lead and never let second-place finisher Simon Burnett of Tucson Ford catch up.

Burnett settled for second in 1:45.10, while Arizona's Darian Townsend touched third in 1:45.54. Arizona also finished fourth through sixth with Bart Steninger (1:46.71), Jack Brown (1:47.06) and Bryan O'Connor (1:47.18) all clocking solid times.

Women's 50 freestyle
Arizona led a Pacific 10 top-four sweep as Lara Jackson touched first in 22.27 and her teammate Courtney Cashion took second in 22.41.

Meanwhile, Stanford's Brooke Bishop placed third in 22.51, while Arizona State's Jen Beckberger finished fourth in 22.64.

Men's 50 freestyle
Sun Devil Nick Brunelli and Tucson Ford's Roland Schoeman provided fans a thrilling finish in the men's splash-and-dash as the duo tied with matching 19.17s. The times are among the top 25 of all time in the event.

Arizona's Albert Subirats clocked a swift time of 19.56 for third, while Longhorn's Neil Walker (19.66) and Ian Crocker (19.79) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to complete the sub-20 times.

Women's 400 medley relay
Arizona's team of Hailey DeGolia, Annie Chandler, Ana Agy and Katherine Raatz touched first in 3:36.37, while Stanford's foursome of Julia Smit, Caroline Bruce, Elaine Breeden and Brooke Bishop placed second in 3:38.13. Arizona State's contingent of Caitlin Andrew, Sara McDaniel, Ashton Aubry and Jen Beckberger finished third in 3:40.84.

Men's 400 medley relay
Arizona swept the medley relays as Cory Chitwood, Ivan Barnes, Albert Subirats and Nicholas Nilo turned in a first-place time of 3:09.08. Tennessee's team of Michael Wolfe, Barry Murphy, Octavio Alesi and Jonas Persson placed second in 3:09.74, while SMU's Pontus Renholm, Alex Hetland, Brett Denham and Luka Vrtovec finished third in 3:13.68.

Diving Results
Texas' Mary Yarrison topped the women's three-meter event with 337.60 points, while Tennessee's Lauren Leroy (298.70) and Stanford's Meg Hostage (297.50) placed second and third.

Yarrison's teammate Matt Cooper won the men's one-meter with 328.85 points, while Stanford's Nate Kim took second with 327.80 points. Texas' Jon Wilcox rounded out the top three with 314.50 points.
