Inky Lowers 100 Fly Mark Again!

By Phillip Whitten

Federal Way, Wash., July 24. HOLLAND's fabulous Flying Dutchwoman, Inge "Inky" De Bruijn, lowered her own world record in the 100 meter butterfly Saturday night with a time of 56.64 seconds. The time sliced five-hundredths of a second off the mark she set May 28 at a Grand Prix meet in Sheffield, England.

Competing at the Region XII Senior Long Course Championships in Federal Way, Washington, July 20-23, the 26-year-old De Bruijn also set U.S. Open marks in the 50 meter freestyle, 24.50 seconds, and 100 meter freestyle, 54.01. Her 100 meter time equals the second fastest 100 meters ever swum by a woman. De Bruijn own the world records in both the 50 and 100 meter freestyle.

In May, when De Bruijn first set the 100 fly record at 56.69 seconds, it hacked an astonishing 1.19 seconds off the record established by jenny Thompson last year–a time that broke the longest-standing record in the sport, Mary T. Meagher's iconic 57.93 from 1981.

Inky's repeated high quality swims in the 100 fly make her the favorite for the gold in Sydney.

In other Region XII highlights, Jamie Reid clocked 2:15.15 for the 200m back and Tara Kirk stopped the clock at 1:10.94 in the 100m breaststroke.
