Cal Poly, UC San Diego vs. UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, California, November 10. CAL Poly and UC San Diego are probably not in the best mood after both teams suffered staggering defeats today versus the Gauchos. The men's and women's team dominated the meet from the very beginning and were able to secure all relay victories and 18 individual wins. The Gauchos were able to beat conference rival Cal Poly 157-99 for the men and 161-98 for the women. UCSB also dominated the Tritons, beating them 184-62 on the men's side and on the women's side, 185-67.

After the UCSB women's "A" team was disqualified in the 200 medley relay, the "B" team, made up of Jessica Cruzat, Katy Freeman, Jamie Cisar, and Erin Yamamoto, was able to step up their game and get the win for the Gauchos (1:49.05). The men's "A" and "B" teams were able to come in 1-2 in the 200 medley relay to set the meet in the motion (1:34.12, 1:36.11).

Cruzat was able to take her energy from the winning relay and produce two more individual race wins. She beat out the competition in the 200 freestyle (1:53.99) and in the 200 backstroke (2:05.67).

The junior was not the only double winner on the day, joining her ranks were junior Chris Good, sophomore Katie Ure, and junior Jeff Sudbury. Good was able to win both the 200 butterfly (1:52.66) and the 400 IM (4:02.04). Ure finished first in the 100 back (59.96) and the 100 fly (57.15). Sudbury continued his winning streak and placed first in the 50 free (21.07) and the 200 breast (2:06.60).

Junior Joe Wood claimed his first win as a Gaucho in the 200 free (1:43.18) and freshman Sara Nicponski kept the ball rolling on her impressive freshman campaign by winning the 100 breast in 1:04.65. Bradley Matsumoto is continuing his success from last year by placing first in the 100 back (52.12).

Junior Erin Yamamoto was able to escape her Cal Poly opponent claim the top spot in the 200 fly (2:04.54). Sophomore Naomi Javanifard also raced to first in the 50 free (24.30). Matt Sullivan was able to inch away from his competition, beating his opponents in the 100 free in 46.57.

Sophomore Anne Marie May is living up to last year's accomplishments and her latest feat was winning the 100 free even with a scoreboard malfunction. Junior Katy Freeman was luckier with the scoreboard and her win was clocked in at a time of 2:22.13.

Danny McClary is starting off his sophomore season on the right foot and things just keep getting better including his time in the 100 fly. He won today's event in 50.55. Freshman Brittany Borowitz showed that experience isn't everything and beat her competitors in the 400 IM (4:27.18)

At the end of the day, the Gauchos were able to complete the meet by sweeping the relay events. The winning women's 200 free relay consisted of May, Courtney Bauer, Yamamoto, and captain Courtney Jenkins (1:37.19). Matsumoto, Sullivan, Scott Vogelgesang, and Ben Malcolm carried the men's team to the relay win (1:24.43).

Cal Poly was able to have two double winners on the day. Matt Waggoner was able to beat out his Gaucho opponents including a tight race with Voglgesang in the 500 free. Melody White also came out strong in the 1000 free and the 500 free.

The Gauchos will dive back into the pool Nov. 17 when they travel to take on CSU Bakersfield in the Bakersfield, Calif.
