UNLV vs. BYU -- November 9, 2007

PROVO, Utah, November 9. BOTH the BYU men and women swimmers out swam UNLV on Friday night at the Richards Building Pool. The Cougar men beat the No. 21 ranked Rebels 185-114, while the BYU women came out on top of the UNLV women 173-127.

"Our guys swam really well tonight," BYU men's coach Tim Powers said. "If there was any question about our team's strength in the conference, I feel we answered those questions tonight."

The Cougar men won both of the relays on the evening. The four-man relay team in the 200-yard medley had the winning time with a 1:30.72. In the 400 freestyle relay, the Cougars touched the wall first recording a time of 3:02.92.

On the women's side, a strong personal performance from freshman Rachel Grant helped boost the Cougars to victory. Grant won three events in the meet, including the 100 and 200 butterfly, and the 200 individual medley-- the 100 fly and 200 IM coming in back-to-back races. Grant's winning time in the 200 fly of 2:01.86 is a new Richards Building Pool record and BYU school record.

"The biggest difference in our team's victory was Rachel Grant and our divers," BYU women's coach Stan Crump said. "UNLV is a very, very good team. They did a great job coming here to swim against us, especially when you consider the change in elevation they had to go through."

The BYU women's divers took first and second at both board heights. In the 1-meter sophomore Tawni Jones took first with a score of 265.25, while in the 3-meter event sophomore Ava Jackman had the best mark with a 290.00. The men's Cougar divers also swept the first-place honors as Drew Moulton and Bryce Engstrom finished atop the podium in the 1-meter and 3-meters, respectively.

The Cougars' next action will be at the Nike Cup on Nov. 15-17 in Long Beach, Calif.

Special thanks to BYU for contributing this report.
