Perkins, Kowalsi Injured; May Miss Grand Prix Meet

By Stephen J Thomas

BRISBANE, July 20. DUAL Olympic 1500 meter freestyle gold medalist, Kieren Perkins, and triple Atlanta medalist, Daniel Kowalski, have both spent time out of the pool in the last week and are likely to miss the Brisbane Grand Prix meet this weekend, which will see most of the Aussie team compete.

Both are now back in the pool but have been confined to the kick board. Perkins injured a rib joint during weight training and has been unable to swim freestyle for a week. Kowalski's injury is a repeat of the chronic shoulder problems that have plagued him for the last few years.

In just under two months, Perkins will attempt to win his third Olympic 1500m freestyle, while Kowalski has been selected as part of the 800m freestyle relay squad – the odds-on favorites for gold in Sydney.

Swiminfo will provide daily results and report on the two day Grand prix meet in Brisbane.
