Washington vs. Salisbury

CHESTERTOWN, Maryland, November 8. WASHINGTON College swept Salisbury as the men won, 123.5-81.5, and the women earned a 125-75 conquest.

For the men, freshman Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) won three individual events. With the victory, the men's swimming program won their 100th all-time meet.

Violette won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.34, the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 58.46 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.81.

Sophomore Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and senior Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) each won two individual events. Soper won the 50-yard freestyle (22.38) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.54). Thomas captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.02) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.22).

Other Washington winners on the evening in individual events was junior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:37.16) and sophomore Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) in the 100-yard butterfly (54.08).

Wentzel also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of (5:19.95). Other second place finishers were senior Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.16) and junior Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.28).

In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Becker, Thomas, Pollock and Soper won the event with a time of 1:41.71.

For the women, the Washington College women's swim team defeated Eastern Shore rival Salisbury University for the 21st consecutive time.

Freshman Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won three individual events for Washington. Glasser won the 1000 freestyle in 10:42.53, becoming the Shorewomen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She then captured the 200 freestyle in 1:58.30 to become the fourth-fastest Shorewoman ever in that event and the 500 freestyle in
5:51.03 to become Washington's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in that event.

Senior Megan Morse (Easton, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) and sophomore Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) each won two individual events. Morse won the 200 individual medley in 2:17.17 and the 100 freestyle in 55.00, while Gerhart took the 100 butterfly in 1:01.70 and the 50 freestyle in 26.04.

Sophomore Amy Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) added a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.16. Junior Andrea Cole (Felton, DE/Caesar Rodney) turned in a personal best time of 1:11.51 in the 100 breaststroke. Cole's time, which was completed as an exhibition, was the fastest time of the event.

Smith, Cole, Gerhart, and sophomore Cailin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) won the 200 medley relay in 1:57.37. Morse, Eisele, junior Anna Green (St. Louis, MO/Principia), and Smith were entered in the 200 freestyle relay as an exhibition and finished in the fastest time at 1:46.38. Eisele added a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.64. Junior Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) swam a personal-best time of 1:06.88 to finish third in the 100 backstroke.
