Arizona 5A Division 2 High School State Championships

TEMPE, Arizona, November 7. ASHLEY Evans, a Pinnacle sophomore, pioneered new ground, roping in two state titles and a state record at the Arizona 5A Division 2 State Championship meet.

Team Scores
Evans helped lead the Pinnacle women to their first 5A Division 2 title, as the Pioneers compiled 383 points. Horizon was the runner-up (300.5) while Rincon garnered third-place honors (198.5).

Horizon and Rincon battled to the end in the men's meet, but Horizon prevailed in the end with 360.5 points. Rincon settled for second with 351 points while Boulder Creek trailed behind the top two teams with a third-place worthy 204 points.

Women's Individual Results
Evans touched first in an All-American time of 1:48.13 in her 200 freestyle before setting a state record and earning All-American recognition in the 500 freestyle. Evans' sizzling 4:42.61 time replaced the former standard of 4:45.16 set by Ashley Chandler of Chandler in 2001.

Pinnacle went three-for-three in the relay events. The 200 medley relay contingent of Lindsey LaPorte, Chloe Broenen, Brianna Lanute and Paige LaPorte clocked a 1:52.81 en route to a gold-medal finish. Lanute, Broenen, Kacey Milligan and Evans edged out Ironwood in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing the event in 1:41.43. The 400 freestyle relay team of Paige LaPorte, Milligan, Lindsey LaPorte and Evans concluded the meet with a bang, winning with an All-American time of 3:33.78.

Men's Individual Results
Bobby Koubratoff of Rincon notched victories in the 200 and 500 freestyles. He covered the 200 freestyle in an All-American 1:41.09 before netting his second All-American honor in the 500 freestyle where he clocked a 4:36.40.

Marshall Dilworth of Sunrise Mountain also claimed two state titles. He posted an All-American 1:53.93 time in the 200 IM and went on to earn an All-American standard in the 100 backstroke, hitting the touchpad at 51.42.

Rincon paced the field in the two freestyle relay events. The Rincon foursome of Aaron Weintraub, David Berens, Koubratoff and Jeff Amlee stopped the clock at 1:27.37 in the 200 freestyle relay and garnered first-place honors in the process. Koubratoff set the tone for the 400 freestyle relay, leading off in a 47.40 time that would lead the grouping of Koubratoff, Alex Doumas, Jared Young and Amlee to a winning time of 3:13.88.

Diving Results
Whitney Morgan of Sunrise Mountain dominated the women's diving competition, winning the event with a 367.50 score. Lindsey Sanders of Boulder Creek and Lauren Thiel of Skyline battled it out for second. Sanders locked up the second-place spot with a 289.85 score while Thiel settled for third with a 284.60 score.

Sam Dorman of Marcos de Niza crushed the men's diving field with a final score of 546.30. Johnny DeMaine of Ironwood corralled the silver medal with a 421.65 score while Jay Irwin of Rincon took third (382.45).
