Teuscher, Phelps Dominate at L.I. Open

LONG ISLAND, July 15. Veteran Cristina Teuscher and newcomer Michael Phelps both turned in impressive performances on the third day of competition of the Long Island Open Swim Meet yesterday.

Teuscher won her second and third events of the Cadillac Challenge Series meet, taking the 200 free in 2:00.73 and the 400 IM in 4:44.85.

In the 200 free, Teuscher turned third in 59.39 at the 100-meter mark, behind Samantha Arsenault (59.14) and Kim Black (59.22). But by 150 meters, she was in command of the race and won by more than a second with Arsenault taking second place (2:02.15) and Black third (2:02.30).

The 400 IM saw a completely different strategy as Teuscher led from wire to wire, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of Maddy Crippen (4:52.10).

Phelps, who just turned 15, added the 400 IM to his win yesterday in the 200 fly. In the process he easily out-distanced Eric Donnelly, considered a prime contender in this event at next month's Olympic Trials.

The confident teenager took a giant lead on the butterfly leg (58.05), then kept on going, splitting 1:08.24 for the backstroke, 1:17.04 for the breaststroke and 1:00.53 for the freestyle. Phelps' 4:23.86 was more than eight seconds faster than Donnelly's 4:32.29.

Maddy Crippen overtook Anita Nall after the first turn to win the 200 breast in 2:33.56 to Nall's 2:35.26.

Arsenault breezed to a win in the 50 free, clocking 26.43 to Leah Martindale's 26.84.

Two 18 year-olds battled for the men's 200m breaststroke title with Brendan Hansen touching first in 2:18.37 to Mark Gangloff's 2:19.88. Despite the challenge from Gangloff, aHansen, who split 1:06.58 at the 100, led all the way.

Ray Rosal won the 50 free in 23.84, ahead of former Auburn standout Dean Hutchinson at 24.08. The 28-year-old Hutchinson swam 23.65 in prelims.
