Wingate Men Defeat Davidson (129-89); Women Fall To Davidson (129-86)

WINGATE, North Carolina, October 27. THE Wingate University men's swimming team defeated Davidson College 129-89 Saturday afternoon in NCAA action at the Wingate University Natatorium. The Davidson women (2-2 overall) returned the favor, topping the host Bulldogs 129-86. The dual meet was the season opener for both Wingate Bulldog teams.

The Wingate men won eight events against the Wildcats (0-3 overall). Bulldog sophomores Gus Chagas (Recife, Brazil) and Mason Norman (Duluth, Ga.) won three events each (two individual races, one relay event).

The 2007 NCAA Division II national champion in the 200 Freestyle, Chagas won the 200 Free (1:43.06) and the 100 Fly (51.89). Norman touched first in the 50 Free (21.71) and the 100 Free (47.87). Three of the four aforementioned times were Wingate pool records. Only Norman's 50 Free time was not a new pool standard.

Chagas and Norman teamed with junior Ben Schoenbachler (Monroe, Ga.) and freshman Lucas Willers (Tacoma, Wash.) to take the crown in the 200 Free Relay with a new pool record time of 1:27.82. Bulldog sophomore Kyle Corcoran (Kent, Wash.) won two individual events: the 200 Individual Medley (1:58.71) and the 500 Free (4:45.60). Both times are new Wingate pool records. Chagas, Norman and Corcoran were All-Americans in 2007.

Wingate freshman Greg Bales (Charlotte, N.C.) defeated Davidson freshman Patrick Whitman (Davidson, N.C.) to take the 1-Meter Diving competition. Davidson's big winner was junior Scott Frantz, Jr. (Arlington, Va.). Frantz won two events for the visiting Wildcats. He won the 100 Back with a pool record time of 52.60.

Earlier in the day, Frantz, senior Fiete Stegger (Carmel, Ind.), sophomore Miller Williams (Lookout Mountain, Ga.) and freshman Tennant Brastow (Farmville, Va.) placed first in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:37.24.

The Wildcat women won eight events to equal the Bulldog men. Davidson freshman Lindsey Martin (Dalton, Ga.) was the big winner for the visitors. Martin won three events. She set a Davidson school record (and a Wingate pool standard) in the 50 Free with a time of 23.75.

Martin also won the 100 Back with a time of 1:00.00. In the day's first event, Martin partnered with fellow freshmen McKensie Carr (West Des Moines, Iowa), Alexa Richardson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Emily Castle (Grayson, Ga.) to win the 200 Medley relay with a time of 1:51.13.

Castle and freshman Jessica Delgehausen (Rogers, Minn.) each won two events. In addition to her relay victory, Castle took the tape in the 100 Fly with a time of 59.77. Delgehausen triumphed in the 200 Free (pool record, 1:56.94) and the 100 Free (55.05).

For Wingate, 2007 All-American Maria Vlashchenko (Khabarovsk, Russia) won two events for the hosts. Vlashchenko won the 200 Individual Medley with a pool-record time of 2:09.74. Later in the meet, she won the 100 Breast with a 1:07.02 clocking.

Wingate will host Gardner-Webb University and Catawba College for a double dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 10. The first event will begin at 1 p.m. Davidson will face Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) opponent the College of Charleston on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Charleston. The CCSA meet will start at 2 p.m.
