Pittsburgh Women Defeat St. Bonaventure (190-53)

ST. BONAVENTURE, New York, October 26. PITT'S women's swimming and diving team won all but one event, as the Panthers defeated St. Bonaventure, 190-53, in their season-opener on the road.

Sophomore Lisa McDonnell (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield), junior Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnett Valley), senior Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill/Florida State) and junior Stacie Safritt (Cranberry, Pa./Seneca Valley) all swam on the winning 200 medley relay team that finished at 1:46.60 to open the meet.

Safritt later won the 100 free (52.43) and the 200 free (1:53.81), while Stevens was another multi-event winner when she won the 100 fly (56.51).

Senior Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek) posted a win in the 50 free at 25.02, while sophomore Tiffany Malatesta (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) and freshman Sara Sullivan (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) trailed slightly for second and third in the sweep.

Later, sophomore Ryann Kishbaugh (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) won the 100 back when she touched at 58.43.

The Panthers also got key wins from freshmen Katie Cutrell (Ligonier, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and Cookie McIntyre (York, Pa./West York Area). Cutrell won the 500 free (5:12.58) and 1000 free (10:33.69), while McIntyre won the 400 IM at 4:33.17.

Stevens, McDonnell, O'Hara and Malatesta then combined for a 1:38.85 finish on the winning 200 free relay team.

In diving events, sophomore Margo Ekstrom (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the way, as the Panthers swept the 1M diving event. Ekstrom recorded 228.08 points, while freshman Mallory Mullady (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and junior Sabrina Jennings (Oxford, Ohio/Badin) placed second and third.

Then on the 3M board Mullady was first and Ekstrom and Jennings trailed behind her.

Pitt opens Big East play tomorrow at Syracuse in a noon contest.
