By Brian Savard

TEMPE, Arizona, October 24. CATALINA Foothills High School monopolized the podium, taking both the men's and women's meet by storm at the Arizona 4A Division One championships.

Team Scores
Catalina Foothills compiled 398 points in the women's meet, outswimming a second-place Chaparral team that scored 376.5 points. Sabino took the third-best spot with 196 points.

The Catalina Foothills men had an easier time staving off the field, amassing 452 points throughout the course of the two-day meet. Sabino won the fight for second place in the team standings with 280 points, while Chaparral settled for third with 222 points.

Women's Individual Results
Chaparral kicked off the meet with a record-setting performance in the 200 medley relay. The contingent of Ashley Brewer, Kasey Taylor, Tamara Lelli and Sarah Cox clocked an All-American standard of 1:48.33, eclipsing the former mark of 1:48.55 set by Chaparral in 2004. Chaparral corralled the top spot in the 400 freestyle relay, claiming an All-American 3:32.89 time.

Sabino sophomore standout Sarah Denninghoff stymied her competition in the sprint events, swimming All-American times in both the 50 freestyle (23.40) as well as the 100 freestyle (50.52)

Shelby Cullinan of Chaparral took the top spot in the diving competition, scoring a 454.60. Her teammate, Roya Asin, placed second with a 339.95 score while Taylor Dick of Shadow Mountain came in third (300.45).

Men's Individual Results
Sabino placed first in two out of three relays. The medley relay quartet of Nick Hadinger, Alex Tucker, Tyler Kybartas and Taylor Smyth hit the pad first in a 1:38.40 time. Hadinger, Wesley Smyth, Taylor Smyth and Kybartas closed out the meet with a winning time of 3:11.24 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Herbie Behm of Catalina Foothills dominated the sprint events. He unleashed a blazing-fast meet record time of 20.35 in the 50 freestyle, eclipsing the former standard held by Justin Ewers of Arcadia. He just missed the overall state record of 20.30 set by Gary Hall Jr. set as the leadoff swimmer of Brophy Prep's 200 freestyle relay in 1994. Behm carried his winning ways over to the 100 freestyle, claiming the state title in an All-American 45.59 time.

The multi-talented Kybartas hedged his bets by steering clear of Behm's sprint events, and his decision paid off as he won the 100 butterfly (50.21) and the 100 backstroke (50.90). Both times were worthy of an All-American distinction.

Victor Valencia of McClintock outdove the diving field with a winning score of 400.10. Jonny Potter of McClintock and Sean Clarke of Sunnyslope earned scores of 357.10 and 345.40, respectively.
