Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen Completes Sweep of USMS Records -- October 23, 2007

KONA, Hawaii, October 23. KARLYN Pipes-Neilsen's amazing year just keeps getting better and better. One of her main goals this year was to become the first person in the history of Masters swimming to set a USMS national record in every distance in every stroke for short course yards. It took her six months, but she did it.

Competing at a meet in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, Pipes-Neilsen destroyed the last record standing for the 45-49 age group by posting a 5:04.71 in the 500-yard freestyle obliterating the previous standard of 5:13.89 set by Suzanne Heim-Bowen in 2004 by more than nine seconds.

Pipes-Neilsen set records in 50 free (24.69), 100 free (52.97), 200 free (1:54.48), 500 free (5:04.71), 1000 free (10:34.17), 1650 free (17:49.73), 50 fly (26.85), 100 fly (58.39), 200 fly (2:09.76), 50 back (28.00), 100 back (59.70), 200 back (2:09.13), 50 breast (31.27), 100 breast (1:09.87), 200 breast (2:32.64), 100 IM (1:00.10), 200 IM (2:11.49) and 400 IM (4:42.52) this year.

While Pipes-Neilsen's amazing feat has made swimming history, a few of the records she set were short lived as fellow teammate and breaststroke phenom Caroline Krattli has since posted a 30.17 in the 50 breast, 1:06.01 in the 100 breast and a 2:25.76 in the 200 breast. Traci Granger also surpassed Pipes-Neilsen's 50 fly standard with a 26.78.
