World Military Games: China Rolls as Games Come to End

HYDERABAD, India, October 20. THE World Military Games held in Hyderabad, India, which may have been an after-thought heading into this week, ended its fifth day of long course meter competition with a world record in hand from yesterday and several top-notch swims throughout the rest of the meet.

Russia dominated the men's 50 freestyle as Evgeny Lagunov and Andrey Grechin gave the fans something to cheer about with a photo finish. Lagunov, however, won by the slimmest of margins, 22.23 to 22.24. Lagunov's time improved on his previous best this year of 22.24 set at the Russian Long Course Championships in February. Meanwhile, the United States' Joe Smutz will bring home a medal after finishing with a bronze-winning 23.02.

A day after becoming the latest world record holder, China's Yang Li built upon the newly-minted standard with another sprint victory. This time, she turned in a 25.62 to claim the women's 50 free title. Germany's Daniela Samulski (25.72) and Belarus' Sviatlana Khakhlova (26.07) took second and third behind her, respectively.

China bagged another gold medal, this time in the men's 200 back, as Zhao Tao hit the wall in 2:03.09 for the win. Italy's Federico Turrini placed second in 2:04.95, while Greece's Georgios Demetis snagged third in 2:05.95.

For the women's 200 back, China won again as Xu Tianlongzi held off Russia's Anastasia Zueva in a head-to-head battle. Xu finished off the victory in 2:12.87, with Zueva taking a close second in 2:12.90. Romania's Camelia Potec took third in 2:17.13.

In the final individual event of the meet, Greece's Spyridon Gianniotis captured the men's 1500 free crown in 15:16.50. The nearest competition came from Russia's Yuri Prilukov, who finished second in 15:22.79, well off his best time of 14:47.29 set at the World Championships in Melbourne. Meanwhile, Italy's Samuel Pizzetti rounded out the podium with a third-place effort of 15:28.15.

Although no relay members were reported, Russia claimed the men's 400 medley relay title with a time of 3:42.51, while China's won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:06.28.
