UMass Sweeps Stony Brook (M: 182-117; W: 186-111)

AMHERST, Massachusetts, October 19. THE UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams both came away with impressive wins over Stony Brook in a home meet at the Joseph Rogers Pool. The men's team swam to a 182-117 victory while the women won 186-111. The Minutemen, led by strong performances by Brian Schmidt and Juan Moliere, were able to overcome a superb outing by Stony Brook swimmer Lukasz Ochmanski who had three first place finishes. On the women's side a strong team performance in which they finished first in 14 out of 17 events simply proved to be too much to handle.

The men's team got off on the right foot as the team of Freshman Max Butler, Senior John Weaver, Junior Nate Bromage, and Sophomore Juan Moliere finished first in the 200 yard medley relay (1:37.34). Stony Brook swimmer Lukasz Ochmanski then took first place in the next two events, the 1,000 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle to pull Stony Brook within one.

It would prove to not be enough as Brian Schmidt raced to two first place victories. He finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.07) and first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:14.60). Schmidt has been impressive in the 200 yard breaststroke early in the season as he followed up his second place finish in the first meet with this first place finish.

Nate Bromage had an impressive two first place finishes. He placed first in the 200 yard butterfly (1:58.44) and first in the 100 yard butterfly (51.63). Juan Moliere also had two first place finishes for the second consecutive meet. He placed first in the 50 yard freestyle (1:58.44) and the 100 yard freestlye (47.48). The Minutemen displayed their depth as they took the top two spots in six events.

The men's diving team picked up a win as senior Reuben Rappe finished first in the 1 meter diving event (290.4) and the 3 meter event (288.90). Freshman Adam Duffield had a third place finish in the 1 meter dive (197.62) and also finished third in the 3 meter dive (225.82).

For the women eight different swimmers placed first as it was a total team effort that propelled them to victory. Sophomore Kathryne Chalikis placed first in two events. She had a first place finish in the 200 yard freestlye (1:59.65) and the 100 yard freestyle (55.05). Fellow sophomore Elizabeth Walsh also had two first place finishes. She finished first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.72) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:12.27). The Minutewomen won the first event, the 200 yard medley relay (1:50.72), and never looked back.

The women's diving team also finished on top thanks to two first place finishes by junior Karren Upperco and two second place finishes by junior Sarah Horstmann.
