University of Illinois-Chicago Sweeps Eastern Illinois in Opener

CHARLESTON, Illinois, October 13. THE UIC swimming and diving team opened their 2007-2008 season with a strong statement from newcomers this Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.

The Flames youth movement began with six freshman accounting for an impressive eleven individual wins for the day.

The team amassed sixteen individual event victories and two relay wins to defeat the Panthers by a score of 134-104 (women) and 140-98 (men).

Freshman Kelly Hashoian (500 free/5:13.06 and 1000 free/10:38.95), Brian Anderson (100 free/49.10 and 200 free/1:47.68), Steve Yemm (50 free/22.04 and 100 fly/51.68), Sonia Peterson (one-meter dive/210.75 and three-meter dive/203.45), Brooke Sawyer (100 fly/1:00.84 and 200 IM/2:16.34) and Evan Dunn (200 IM/1:59.35) all exited the pool with victories in their first collegiate meet.

The upperclassmen made their presence known as well, as senior school record-holder Andrea Giczewski anchored the 200 medley relay, then claimed the 50 free (24.48) and 100 free (53.83) in the first meet of her final season.

Junior distance specialist Davor Trnovljakovic started his season off with a pair of victories in the 500 free (4:57.50) and 1000 free (10:20.79).

Sophomore Andy Peterson contributed to the first place 200-yard medley relay, then took the 100 backstroke in his season opener for the second straight year (56.46).

Also turning in strong second-place finishes were senior captain Dan Hare (100 back/57.01), sophomore sibling Mike Hare (1000 free/10:31.00), junior diving captain Tristan Oleynik (1-meter dive/236.25), sophomore Shaina Israel (1000 free/11:15.38) and junior Ashley Simos (50 free/26.19).

The diving squad returns to competition next Sunday at the UIC Natatorium for the UIC Diving Invitational. The entire swimming and diving team returns to dual meet action at home on Friday, October 26th hosting Wright State.
