Orjan Madsen To Quit as Head Coach of German Swimming After Beijing Olympics

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 11. WITH one rumor going around about a high-profile American swimmer retiring, which SwimmingWorldMagazine.com is working on confirming with a first-hand source, word comes out that head coach Orjan Madsen has informed German Swimming that he will not renew his contract after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

According to an article at SwimNews, Orjan Madsen intends to leave his post as the head coach of German Swimming after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"For me, this project lasts two and a half years, then it's over," Madsen told reporters according to SwimNews. "I'm 62 years old and I want to do other things."

Madsen has been at the forefront of trying to overcome Germany's dark past with the East German doping scandals of the 1970s and 80s. As reported here, Madsen has proposed blood passports to help increased the chances of a clean sport of swimming.

Madsen has been voluntarily taking blood and urine samples, regularly, from his team and storing them at the University of Munich so that if any future testing program is developed that might detect banned substances or masking agents, he'll have the samples available immediately and ready to go. Anti-doping managers have applauded his move and point to it as a major improvement.
