Washington Splits With Saint Louis (M: 157-131; W: 101-197)

SAINT LOUIS, Missouri, September 29. WASHINGTON University in St. Louis' men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2007-08 season with their annual meet against local rival Saint Louis University. The men stormed to a 157-131 victory over SLU's Division I squad, while the women's team showed resilience but fell to SLU, 197-101.

The men's team won both 200-yard relays anchored by strong performances by junior Charles Stewart, Killeen, Texas (Ellison). On the women's side, junior Kelly Kono, La Grange, Ill. (Lyons Township) posted a 25.38 second time to win the 50-yard freestyle—a race she doesn't normally participate in. The women also won the 200-yard backstroke thanks to stellar performance (2:11.46) by senior Meredith Nordbrock, Flossmoor, Ill. (Homewood-Flossmoor).

The WU men's victory hinged on a few key races. The Bears swept the first three places in the men's 200-yard breaststroke, led by junior Julian Beattie, San Ramon, Calif. (California), who posted a time of 2:09.58. Sophomore Alex Beyer, Seattle, Wash. (Seattle Prep School) also swam exceptionally well with a 4:46.99 time to win in the 500-yard freestyle by nearly a full 10 seconds. The win was additionally impressive considering that Bayer was not even swimming in the 500-yard freestyle at this time last year. Washington University's men's squad sealed their victory when junior Perry Bullock, Millbrook, N.Y. (Cardinal Gibbons) and Beyer finished first (1:57.18) and second (1:58.44) respectively in men's 200-yard IM.

Head coach Brad Shivley was very happy with his team's overall performance, "The women's team showed real toughness today considering our thin roster and the guys worked really hard too. They've got a great program at SLU; it was nice to come away with a victory."

Special thanks to Washington for contributing this report.
