Washington State Dominates Idaho in Season Opener

PULLMAN, Washington, September 28. THE Washington State women's swim team opened its 2007-08 campaign Friday evening with a 278-158 win over Idaho.

WSU clocked in with the fastest time in all 11 events. Leading the charge were freshmen Talor Whitaker and Rugile Mileisyte. Both collected five wins with Mileisyte winning the 50 yard backstroke in 27.41 and Whitaker coming in first in the 50 yard freestyle in 24.65. Both were members of the 4×100 IM relay and 200 yard medley relays which won in 4:00.80 and 1:48.45, respectively.

"It was great to see some of our younger swimmers step up. Talor swam quite a bit and was competitive in all her races. Sierra Burton stepped it up and Rugile had a bruised knee but still wanted to get in the meet and swim," said WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. "It was fun to see that out of those three."

Junior Shawna Keller and senior Bryn Mooney each finished the meet with four wins. Keller won the 50 yard butterfly in 26.14 and Keller clocked the 50 yard breaststroke in 30.25 for the win.

Anna Humphrey headlined the Vandals' effort with one second-place and four third-place finishes. Humphrey touched third with a time of 26.59 in the 50 yard butterfly and was a member of the second-place 350 yard backstroke relay (3:41.36).

JoJo Miller also put in a good effort for Idaho with one second-place finish and three third-place showings. Miller placed third in the 50 yard backstroke in 31.16 and was a member of the second-place 350 yard breaststroke relay (4:11.00).

"I think it was a good benchmark," said Quam. "When the finish was on the line, we were really trying to go after it and we got a lot of those touches and that's exciting."
