Rebeca Gusmao Connected to Doping by Brazilian Media; Brazilian Coaches Defend Gusmao

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 12. OVER the past few days, Brazilian media outlets have reported that Rebeca Gusmao "presented an abnormal testosterone level" during tests from 2006. However, several of Gusmao's supporters have come out in defense of the Pan American Games multiple-medalist.

In an article by Prensa Latina, the news agency states that Brazil's O Globo reported the abnormal tests stemming from 2006 and that Gusmao underwent further testing after the Pan American Games.

Meanwhile, Michelle Lenhardt and Isabela Amblard, both representatives of the Brazlian club Unisanta, have come to Gusmao's defense in a Google-translated article published in Estadao. Both Lenhardt and Amblard stated that a presumption of innocence should be first and foremost in the case. The article also states that Gusmao was one of the most tested swimmers at the Pan American Games.

Other concerns have been presented regarding Gusmao's health, as she fainted during the Brazilian National Championships held in Florianapolis and went to the hospital for oxygen. According to Swimming World Magazine correspondents in South America, this is not the first time Gusmao has fainted as she battles asthma. Additionally, Gusmao stated that she had food poisoning that day from a meal the night before.

According to various Brazilian media outlets, FINA has not made a statement, the Brazilian Sports Federation does not know of a positive doping test and The World Anti-Doping Agency responded that it does not comment about ongoing investigations.
