Standard Chartered International Masters Meet Highlights Singapore Masters Swimming Series -- September 4, 2007

SINGAPORE, September 4. THE Standard Chartered International Masters swim meet, staged in Singapore from Aug 24-26, marked a new stage in the development of Masters swimming in Singapore. The meet was the flagship event of the Standard Chartered Masters Swimming Series, which saw Masters swimming make its debut in the island-nation. The inaugural International Masters was one of the top-tier events for Waterfest 2007, a Singapore Sports Council initiative to promote Singapore as a water sports hub.

Over the course of the year, with the support of title sponsors Standard Chartered Bank, the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Swimming Association, Masters swimming was introduced to the sporting public in Singapore with a series of four Masters swimming meets, culminating in the staging of the three-day International Masters.

Those who came include Benny Kwa, traveling from Malaysia with his family to take part, Roger Finch from South Africa with his wife and the Sea Green Club from Hong Kong.

Gerda Williams of the Darwin Stingers certainly had reason to celebrate after she set Australian Masters records in the women's 1500 and 800 backstroke for the 65-69 age group. Her times of 28:28.89 and 15:02.32 eclipsed the old Australian records of 29:54.12 set by Tricia Liddy in 2004 and also Tricia Liddy's 15:34.50 set in 2003 for the 800.
