Veteran Returning to Open Water Scene

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, August 29. THE Netherlands' Edith van Dijk, formerly one of the top open-water female performers in the world, has declared that she plans on contesting the 10-kilometer open-water events at the Beijing Olympics next summer. The next Olympiad will be the first in which open-water swimming is part of the schedule.

A 34-year-old, van Dijk won the 10-kilomter discipline at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, but retired not long after. However, the opportunity to race in Beijing and in the Olympic Games obviously has interested the Dutchwoman, who won a bronze medal in Austria over the weekend while racing in a FINA Marathon World Cup event.
